Spicy Aztec Coffee Recipe (Mexican Mocha Latte)

Equipment

  • 1 espresso machine (with milk steamer for hot drink variety)
  • 2 small bowls or cups
  • 1 small wire whisk or fork
  • 1 medium sized mug (for hot drink) or glass (for cold drink)

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons gelatin powder (optional, omit for cold drink)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/16 to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (to taste)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 6 to 8 oz whole milk (to taste)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice cubes (for cold drink variety)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl or cup, combine maple syrup, cocoa powder, ground cinnamon, cayenne powder, and salt with a small wire whisk until there are no clumps.
  • Make a high quality double shot of espresso with your espresso machine.
  • Add optional gelatin (omit for a cold drink) to espresso while mixing constantly until there are no clumps.
  • Add chocolate mixture and espresso mixture to serving cup and combine well.
  • For a hot drink: steam milk with coffee machine, then pour frothy milk into chocolate and espresso mixture while stirring.
  • For a cold drink: Add cold milk to coffee and chocolate mixture, then add desired amount of ice cubes.
