Why You Will Love This Mexican Mocha Recipe

Easy

This recipe is very simple to make. Combine dry ingredients and maple syrup with a high quality, freshly brewed espresso. To finish, add your hot milk for a hot coffee drink or chilled milk and ice cubes for an Aztec iced mocha recipe!

Healthy

This creamy Mexican coffee is made without processed sugars, and includes optional gelatin for added protein! For the healthiest version, use high quality organic ingredients, such as pure maple syrup, organic cocoa powder, pasture raised gelatin and milk, and high quality organic coffee.

Delicious

This spicy mocha has a delightful fusion of strong coffee and dark chocolate flavors, enhanced by the sweetness of maple syrup and the warmth of a bit of cinnamon. A dash of cayenne pepper brings a subtle yet satisfying heat with every sip, while whole milk adds the perfect creamy texture to balance the spice and round out the flavors. It’s a comforting and invigorating drink that will spice up your day with every sip! This is a great recipe for any coffee fan wanting to spice their coffee drinks up!

Ingredients That Make This Spicy Coffee Drink Amazing

Espresso: espresso shots added to Mexican hot chocolate transforms it into a delicious Mexican mocha! This recipe is best served as an espresso drink, and won’t be as delicious using French press, drip coffee or instant coffee, I highly recommend espresso.

Cocoa Powder: cocoa powder adds rich chocolate flavors to this mocha recipe.

Gelatin: gelatin not only adds health benefits to this recipe, but also creates an extra thick and creamy consistency in the hot drink variation. Omit this ingredient if you are making an iced Mexican mocha!

Maple syrup: maple syrup adds a natural sweetness to this recipe without the need for processed sugar or unhealthy store bought chocolate syrup products.

Cinnamon: cinnamon is a classic ingredient used in Mexican chocolate recipes, with its unique warm, sweet flavor.

Cayenne pepper: cayenne adds a bit of spice to this recipe! Make sure to start with a very small amount, and add more if desired.

Salt: a pinch of salt acts as a flavor enhancer in this recipe.

What Kind of Coffee Beans to Use?

It is important to use high quality coffee beans not only for flavor, but also for health! Even organic coffee beans can have issues like mold contamination. You can learn more about contamination in coffee here, and check out my favorite coffee bean brand at the bottom of this post.

Is this Aztec Coffee Best Served Hot or Iced?

Both!

This drink can be served as cozy, hot mocha or a refreshing, iced coffee drink! Make sure to omit the optional gelatin if making the cold version, as the gelatin will solidify when cold. See the recipe below for instructions on making this drink hot or iced.
