Perfect as a dip for French fries, spread over a juicy burger, or incorporated into a variety of dishes, this delicious ketchup is versatile and great addition to so many dishes!

How is This Ketchup Recipe Whole30 Friendly?

Most store-bought ketchup brands include ingredients like refined sugar or even high fructose corn syrup, but this recipe uses dates to give your ketchup the perfect touch of natural sweetness!

When following a whole30 regimen, it is important to exclude added sugar from the diet. While sweets in the form of whole fruit are allowed, natural sweeteners like maple syrup and honey are not whole30 compliant.

Don’t worry – dates come to the rescue when following the strict whole30 diet! Dates are a fruit that has a neutral flavor and sweetness that can be added to a wide variety of recipes, including ketchup!

How is this Ketchup Paleo Friendly?

Paleo diets do not allow processed sugars, but natural sweeteners and fruits such as dates are allowed, which means this is recipe creates a healthy paleo ketchup!

Why You Will Love This Recipe

Easy

While making homemade ketchup might sound intimidating, this easy ketchup recipe only has a few simple steps. Blend dates with water, then add all ingredients to a sauce pan. Cook it all down until thick, and now you have ketchup!

Healthy

I am a big ketchup fan, but I prefer to avoid ingredients like cane sugar and other additives. Making your own ketchup is the perfect way to make ketchup more healthy than most of the ketchup brands at the grocery store. By using natural sweeteners and organic ingredients, you can make a homemade version of ketchup that is much better for you than many store bought options.

Delicious

With its natural sweetness, tanginess, and notes of flavorful organic spices, this ketchup is a well rounded condiment that goes perfectly with a wide variety of dishes! Some Whole30 and paleo ketchup recipes are not sweet, but this recipe has a touch of sweetness that really adds flavor to your favorite foods.

Ingredients That Make This Ketchup Amazing

Organic tomato paste: the easiest way to make ketchup is with tomato paste, since it has already been cooked down. I prefer to buy tomato paste in glass instead of in a can to avoid the chemicals in the can lining. Another tomato product that works is tomato puree or strained tomatoes: simply cook it down for longer to turn it into a paste.

Dates: my favorite are Medjool dates, but Deglet Noor dates also work well. Make sure to remove the pits if they are not pitted!

Unfiltered apple cider vinegar: this ingredient adds a ton of flavor by balancing the tomato-date sweetness with a delightful tanginess. Feel free to substitute with white vinegar if you prefer.

Spices: the spices in this recipe like cloves, allspice, organic onion powder and organic garlic powder, add warm, savory, and bright notes to this ketchup recipe. Feel free to tweak the spices to your personal taste, and maybe even add a dash of cayenne pepper for a little kick!

How to Enjoy This Whole30 Ketchup

You can enjoy your homemade, healthy ketchup the same way you enjoy regular ketchup!

  • As a dip for French fries or sweet potato fries.
  • Made into a glaze for a whole30 or paleo meatloaf recipe.
  • Spread on a hearty grass fed hamburger.
  • Enjoyed on healthy grass fed hot dogs.
  • Used to make a healthy BBQ sauce for your favorite grilled recipes.

How to Store This Homemade Ketchup

Store this ketchup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 4 months. If freezing, make sure to stir well once thawed before using.

Why You Should Make This Ketchup a Day in Advance

I noticed a big difference in the flavor of this ketchup after it sat in the refrigerator for a day. Not only was it completely chilled, but the flavors had time to meld and develop, making it much more delicious. I suggest making this recipe the day before you plan to enjoy it for the best results!
