Why You Will Love This Recipe
Easy
Making your own lip balm might sound like a difficult task, but this recipe is so simple! All you have to do is melt the ingredients together and give it a good mix. Next, pour the mixture into it into the lip balm containers, let it cool, and it’s ready to use! You don’t need any special equipment, like lip balm tubes or a small funnel to make this easy recipe.
Healthy
Most lip balms found at grocery stores (including health food stores) are loaded with seed oil based carrier oils, flavorings, and other unhealthy ingredients. This homemade lip balm recipe is made with coconut oil and grass fed tallow, making it low in polyunsaturated fatty acids and rich in nutrients!
Convenient
This organic lip balm can be stored in small tins or small glass containers at room temperature for quite a while, and can be kept in the refrigerator or freezer even longer! If you’ve ever experienced rancid lip balm, you know it’s best to avoid it! The shelf life of coconut oil and tallow are much longer than the oils in most store-bought lip balm.
Ingredients That Make This Lip Balm Amazing

Coconut oil: the main ingredient in this homemade balm is organic coconut oil. The benefits of coconut oil for lips are remarkable! It’s a fruit oil that is more stable than seed oils as it is high in saturated fats and very low in unsaturated fats, making it healthier for the skin. It’s has antioxidant properties, and can reduce signs of aging. (Source)
Grass fed beef tallow: this old fashioned ingredient is making a comeback, and for good reason. It’s packed with vitamins, and helps hydrate and moisturize the skin. It can help improve elasticity and increase collagen production .(Source) (Source)
Raw honey: raw honey is so beneficial for this skin. It contains anti-inflammatory properties, and it’s humectant, which means it attracts moisture from the air and helps draw it into the skin. It’s also packed with vitamins and minerals! (Source)
Beeswax: beeswax provides a seal for the lips, locking in the moisture, the benefits from the nourishing ingredients, and adding a waterproofing effect.
How to Store Homemade Coconut Lip Balm
If stored properly, this homemade lip balm can be kept at room temperature in a dry place for about 3 months.
- You can store this homemade lip balm in the refrigerator for up to 12 months! Make sure to keep an eye out for signs of spoilage such as mold or unpleasant smells.
- For proper storage, keep sealed in an airtight glass container, and ensure there is no exposure to moisture.
- Don’t “double dip”- use a clean finger for each use to reduce exposure to bacteria.
Equipment Needed to Make Coconut Oil Lip Balm
To make a batch of lip balm, you don’t need any fancy equipment. Just a few things you already most likely have around the house.
Kitchen scale: a kitchen scale is used to weigh out the ingredients, so that you have a consistent end product. Make sure to set the scale to grams.
Double boiler or makeshift double boiler: this is how we melt the ingredients without overheating them! You can use a small pot with a small metal bowl or glass bowl set over it.
Whisk: this is an ideal utensil for mixing the ingredients together, but a spoon or fork also work well.
Oven mitts: you have to pour the hot lip balm mixture directly into the storage container, so you’ll want to lift the hot bowl with an oven mitt.
Small glass jar: this is for storing the finished product. A 2 oz glass cosmetic jar works best. Make sure it’s clean and dry!
Why No Lip Balm Tubes?
Lip balm tubes are made of plastic – so why not avoid them? Plastic is all around us, and is linked to many health issues. While we may not be able to avoid plastic entirely, we can definitely reduce our exposure. In my opinion, it’s even easier to use a small glass or tin lip balm container than plastic. Check out the bottom of this post for recommended glass lip balm containers.
Optional Add Ins
Essential oils: you can add 4 to 6 drops of essential oil such as lemon, orange, or lavender if you like. Make sure to use high quality, organic, and food grade essential oils for this recipe.
Vanilla: for a vanilla flavor, I recommend adding a tiny bit of vanilla bean paste while heating, and then straining it out as you pour into your glass container. I tried using vanilla extract and it tends to separate from the rest of the ingredients, so I don’t recommend the latter method.
Cocoa butter: for a vegan lip balm, you can swap out the tallow for cocoa butter!
