What is a Sweet Potato Latte?
A sweet potato latte is a popular drink in Korea, where it is served as a non-caffeinated beverage. It is reminiscent of a pumpkin spice latte, with earthy and spicy flavors that create a wonderfully creamy, warm drink. You can enjoy it caffeine-free or with coffee!
What Type of Sweet Potato to Use?
There are a wide variety of sweet potatoes, like orange sweet potatoes, purple sweet potatoes, and even white sweet potatoes! Korean sweet potatoes (goguma) are the same as Japanese sweet potatoes. They can often be found at grocery stores is the U.S., and have purplish skin and white flesh. This variety has a mildly sweet and nutty flavor that is delicious in a Korean sweet potato latte.
For this recipe I often use the Covington sweet potato variety, which is an orange-fleshed sweet potato that was developed in North Carolina in the early 2000s. It has a creamy texture and a rich flavor that I love in this recipe.
Next I want to try purple sweet potatoes and make a beautiful purple sweet potato latte, also known as an ube latte!

How to Roast Sweet Potatoes
My favorite way to roast sweet potatoes is by placing them on a lined baking sheet, and slicing a few slits evenly around each sweet potato with a sharp knife.
Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 1-2 hours, depending on the size of the sweet potatoes.
They are done when they are very soft and can be easily punctured with a fork.
How to Store Roasted Sweet potatoes.
I like to store cooked sweet potatoes with the skin on in an airtight container, and remove the flesh from the skin when I’m ready to use it.
Alternatively, you can remove the cooked flesh from the skin and store it as a sweet potato puree.
I like to keep roasted sweet potatoes on hand for snacking on and for making recipes like this one!
How to Make a Healthy Spiced Sweet Potato Latte
Add cooked sweet potato flesh, 1 cup of milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, and salt to a high speed blender. Blend until smooth.
Pour blended ingredients into a small pot and place on a stove set to medium low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
While blended ingredients are heating up, use the steam wand on an espresso maker to froth the rest of the milk.
(If you don’t own an espresso machine with a steam wand, heat the rest of the milk up with the other ingredients in the small pot for a less frothy beverage, or use a handheld milk frother once all ingredients are heated.)
Once blended ingredients are steaming and milk is frothed, add blended ingredients into a 16 oz serving cup.
If using optional espresso, add to serving cup.
Gently pour frothed milk into serving cup while slowly stirring with a spoon to combine with the blended ingredients, reserving as much froth as you can.
Remove stirring spoon and carefully add the rest of the froth to the serving cup.
Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Enjoy!
