Why You Will Love This Recipe

Real Espresso
Most coffee yogurt recipes are made with instant coffee powder or instant espresso. If you are a coffee snob like me, you probably don’t keep instant coffee on hand, and only buy high quality coffee beans. By using a strained yogurt like plain Greek yogurt or skyr, you can use real espresso to make coffee yogurt!
Healthy
This coffee yogurt is made with strained yogurt and maple syrup, creating a high protein, naturally sweetened treat! High quality organic coffee (see the brand I recommend below) is also packed with health benefits like antioxidants and metabolism-boosting properties.
Easy
This easy recipe can be made in minutes! Simply brew the espresso and combine it with the other ingredients. Let it chill for a little while before enjoying for the best results.
Delicious
The tartness of the yogurt along with the fragrant and bitter flavors of strong coffee create a unique taste when combined. The natural sweetness of maple syrup and vanilla tie everything together in a well rounded, delicious way. You can even add a little cocoa powder to this recipe for a yummy mocha version!
What Kind of Yogurt to Use?
- Since this recipe is sweetened with maple syrup, make sure to use a plain yogurt.
- It’s important to use a thick, strained variety of yogurt for this recipe because of the use of real espresso. If you use an unstrained yogurt it will be more of a coffee smoothie than a yogurt. You can either use Greek yogurt or skyr.
- Both Greek yogurt and skyr can be a little expensive, but you can save money by making your own! Learn how to make your own skyr here. One thing I love about strained varieties of yogurt is that they are high in protein, making them extra filling and nourishing!
What Kind of Coffee to Use?
Make sure to use espresso for this recipe. Do not use regular drip coffee or French press coffee – it will not be very flavorful! If you are a regular coffee drinker you may want to look into purchasing an organic, low mycotoxin coffee brand. Learn more about the toxins in most coffees here, and see my favorite coffee brand below. Feel free to use decaf coffee if you avoid caffeine!
Is it Bad to Add Hot Coffee to Yogurt?
In my experience, adding hot espresso does not have a negative affect on the flavor or texture of the yogurt. It may initially kill some of the probiotics in the yogurt due to the temperature, but most likely not very many by the time it’s mixed in.
Tips and Tricks
- You may be tempted to make the espresso ahead of time so that it chills and then add it to the yogurt later – but don’t do this! Go ahead and combine the espresso with the yogurt, and then put it in the fridge to chill. The flavors of espresso will degrade quickly if left on its own, so it’s important to add it to milk or yogurt fairly quickly after brewed to preserve the good taste.
- The bitterness of the espresso may take away from the amount of sweetness you may be used to, so add more maple syrup if needed.
- You can enjoy the coffee yogurt without chilling it first, but it won’t be as cold and thick. For the best yogurt experience, let it chill for about 30 minutes before enjoying.
How to Serve Coffee Yogurt

- It’s great on its own!
- Add some of your favorite healthy granola.
- Add some cocoa powder to the recipe for a mocha coffee yogurt!
- Add some fresh or frozen blueberries on top! Blueberries and coffee pair surprising well. Check out my Blueberry Iced Latte recipe here!
- Throw it in an ice cream maker and make coffee yogurt ice cream!
How to Store Coffee Yogurt
Scoop into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 5 months.
